Today I'm officially founding the Tift Merritt Screaming Teen Fan Club, and you heard it here first.  We should have t-shirts and be out of control.  Cheers.

Count me in! I will be at the show in Nashville coming up on August 28th, and I plan on fainting if she sings Still Pretending.

Chris, thanks for mentioning SP--actually, before you faint, you must help the TMSTFC establish an important tradition by repeating the Memphis incident in which Still Pretending was repeated in the set list after an audience member met Tift's challenge by placing a bottle--not just the requested shot--of Maker's Mark on the stage for her.  (Tift recounted this incident--minus the whiskey--for an interviewer way back in late 04-early 05 as the most memorable moment for her on the Tambourine tour thus far.)  I think this should happen at every show in which real fans are in attendance.  I also think the bottle should have a tag on it that says "courtesy TMSTFC" and should be accompanied by a shot glass so that she doesn't suffer the indignity of having to slug from the neck.  Rock on.  Phillip

One of these days I may actually make some--it's definitely been known to happen here at my place.  If I do they'll be hot pink with an airbrushed portrait of Tift looking beatific with big white angel wings and a bottle of bourbon.

Is Tift a fan of Maker's Mark? I am going to use that in my quest to get her to do a show in Louisville sometime soon. The distillery is about an hour and a half from here and they give tours. My friend works for the company that distributes Woodford Reserve, and that's also a mighty fine bourbon.

I may have a difficult time giving her a bottle of Maker's at the Nashville show. It's at a city park late in the afternoon. They may frown upon the evils of bourbon. However, I can't really call myself a fan if I don't try.

Philip,

Count me in too!

My friend are I were considering stage diving at the recent (appallingly quiet) show in Maidstone, but the stage was only 2 inches high and we weren't sure anyone would catch us ....

Chris, I totally think you should tell her if she comes there you'll arrange distillery tours for her.  She might go for it.  And I look forward to congratulating you for your successful effort to place Kentucky's finest before NC's finest in the town about which Tift said, "Nashville scares me."

P

Vicky, at those appallingly quiet shows, it's those of us out there who give something back that make them bearable for the performer.  ". . . when you give yourself away/to a stranger on the road/who gives you nothin' in return . . ."

Phillip,

That's so true!  My friends and I do whoop, but we Brits are terribly shy .... (which is why the shows are so quiet in the first place) .... I'll try harder on the next tour!

Whoops--that was to Gary's--you set some MM on the stage and my bet is she'll get it (as in, catch on).

The first time I ever saw her was here in town at the start of the Tambourine gigs and it was a Christmas charity benefit with just her and Brad and there was a little group of women over in the corner down front who were just druuuuunk.  And they were giggling and talking loud and woo-hooing and yelling "where's Zeke?" and everybody was getting irritated with them and finally Tift was introducing Laid A Highway and talking about Bynum which is the little town it was inspired by, where she lived while going to UNC, and when she said "Bynum" these women just whooped and hollered and Tift goes, "Are y'all from Bynum?  There's, like, not that many people in the whole town!"  and they hollered something else and she goes, "Wait, I know you . . . oh, y'all are CUT OFF!!!"

After the show in Nashville, I gave Tift a small bottle of Maker's Mark and a shot glass (it was also a blatant bribe to get her to do a show in Louisville). She insisted we do a shot together. Who am I to say no?

That picture is my official application for membership in the Tift Merritt Screaming Teen Fan Club.

Whom do I need to bribe to get into this club?   Do I get a t-shirt?  I've been a teenager for going on 42 years now.  I've only been a Tift fan since aught-one.  I think I've got a picture of me with Tift somewhere, but the top of my head is probably cut off (I've got a pretty big head).

I think you either have to bride Phillip Reid, or give Tift a shot of Maker's Mark.

Oh hell--you're in.  I've only been one since aught-four so you're ahead of me by a good bit, and I started the damn thing.  My twisted upstairs machinery is creaking and whirring on just exactly what t-shirts I want.  I am leaning towards cryptic, so that only TM or other STFCers will know what the hell they are.  Course, someone might ask, and then we could say, Ah, you must join tiftmerritt.net to find out . . . heh heh.

Chris, you completely rock like a muh--saw the picture of you, North Carolina's finest, and Kentucky's finest.  You did it.  I shall repeat the tradition on 11/8.  We shall keep Tift in bourbon.  TMSTFC forever.  (Man this is fun.  After a week from hell, mostly computer-related, it's nice to open this site up and get some joy out of the little black satanic box.  Rock on.)
