Hi folks,

First post here - registered a few weeks ago on Chris's excellent site, (I'm responsible for the 13 photos of Tift from 28th July at Cambridge here http://www.tiftmerritt.net/Photos/2006Shows/tabid/71/AlbumID/390-9/Default.aspx) So I've been lurking for a while but thought it was time to jump right in!

Anyway, whilst eating dinner tonight I was listening to Bob Harris Country on BBC Radio 2 and this Sally Spring track caught my ear - it really stood out as a class piece - (t'was a cover of Gram Parsons 'Hickory Wind') - thought to myself, this sounds like it could be a  great song for Tift to do.... and then, I couldn't believe it when Bob back-announced the record, and said that Tift was in fact singing along with Sally on it!!   (Thought to myself, I am a genius )

Must admit I've never heard of Sally Spring (www.sallyspring.com), but apparently she is something of a legend in folk-rock circles starting her career in the 70s but she's only just released her 4th album   Anyway it seems like Tift's in good company as the likes of Caitlin Cary, Thad Cockrell, Gene Parsons (Byrds) also contributed to Sally's latest album.

You can listen to the song here...this link takes you to the BBC radio player and you can hear Bob's entire show over again.  The Sally Spring song is at about 22mins 30secs into the 1 hour show (You can skip there quicker with judicious use of the fast-forward buttons)

(Not sure if it will work for folks outside the UK though  and it will only be available for 7 days from now when it will be replaced by next weeks show on 14th Sept)

Just found 30 second clip of 'Hickory Wind' available on Amazon.com page http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F4TMAU/sr=8-1/qid=1153749604/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4376611-2746563?ie=UTF8

Enjoy!

Andy,

Thanks again for the pictures, and for the post. Did I notice a signed copy of Home Is Loud in those pictures?

That's right Chris - Tift graciously signed the copy I bought from her at the Birmingham (England) show last November.  It was the day after Thanksgiving and while she was signing the cd I made some remark to her like 'Did you have turkey for dinner yesterday?'  I'm pretty sure she replied she had been for an Italian meal.  But 'cos of all the general chatter and hubub around the cd table I couldn't quite catch her words clearly - anyway, she passed me back the cd, I said thanks, told her I loved the show, shook her hand and walked away clutching my prize!

Next time I'd better take some Makers Mark with me!

Sounds very similar to my first encounter with her, at a club downtown in early Dec. 04.  I was pretty much still stunned at having just listened to someone so fucking incredible in such an intimate venue, and stunned that she would go out and meet people who just walked up to her, that I was shy.  I was bolder next time, and I remember very distinctly giving her her Exile On Main St. t-shirt, getting a hug, and walking away saying to my brother-in-law, "I can die now."
