OK Teens - thought I'd kick off a thread for the Durham show as its only 1 week away, and its time to see if anyone wanted to get together for a pre-show meet.

First off, I wanna know who's coming?  Don't be shy now - we're all friendly, and look like normal people (for the most part )

Next up, where's a good place to meet up?  I'm not exactly familiar with the dive bars and juke joints, so maybe someone in the know can point us away from those to a classy establishment?

I'm stopping at the Marriott which is just across the street from the theatre, but I have transport (thank you Phillip & Andie!)

Would be great to see a good turnout from tm.net at the show, so let us know what your plans are!

Andy

I'll be there, along with the friend who shot the infamous bad stapling video. We'll definitely be happy to meet up with the group. There's certainly an incentive to meet a guy who would fly across the Atlantic Ocean for this show!

(Plus I need to pick up our tickets from Phillip and Zach.)

I don't know if Forrest is planning to meet up with us, but he probably has the best ideas about good places to meet in Durham.

Dudes! I'm so there! I so don't have a choice anyway, but even if I did, I'd be so there anyway! Forrest or Zach, where is a good place around there for dinner and a relaxed place for a meetup? We'll obviously have Mr. Andy in tow.

Forrest and Zach, if we don't hear from you on the forum, we'll email you. I'm headed out to Boston for work tomorrow and will be back Tuesday afternoon. We'll work out details this week.

Look forward to seeing everyone! Hub, are you coming too? I hope so!

I believe Bobby Dixon and PM Colt will be there--I figure the Mystery Couple will be if they can (we know their names now, but it's more fun to call them the Mystery Couple)--and Mr. David Kennedy from Houston.

I'd think you'd want to be steered TOWARD the dive bars and juke joints, Andy!  C'mon, where is your sense of adventure?  You do want to see the real South, don't you?

Will somebody please feed this poor English boy on barbeque, cornbread and sweet tea when he's down there?

Have fun, y'all, wish I were going to be there.  MD #4 and I will do it up LA style at the Troubador, so you can feel jealous of us later in the tour!

Thanks for the replies so far folks, I can't wait to be there! I believe Phillip, Andie & I will be hitting downtown Durham early to mid-afternoon Saturday after the drive up from Wilmington.

Hey Shug you're right I do want the real thing, just kidding on you, anywhere these guys chose is fine by me!

I arrive late morning on Saturday, and I'm staying at the Marriott where Andy is also staying.  I am renting a car, however, so wherever y'all decide is fine by me.  I think the only stipulation should be that someone has to introduce the Brit to Carolina-style barbecue.  Then all the Memphis natives (and the Texan) can argue about it.

I've been planning on getting to Durham early afternoon and hanging out with an old friend at Duke that I haven't seen in awhile. If there's going to be a meet-up before the show, I'll be there. Just don't make it too classy a place; otherwise they might not let me in. ;)

DavidK, you're forgetting the first big argument: Eastern NC-style barbecue, or Lexington-style?

We've gotten some suggestions from Our Man From Durham (Zeke) which we are gathering information about and will post in next 48.

I live way over in Holly Springs, which isn't much closer to Durham than Wilmington (okay, I exaggerate). I work in Durham and get out of town as fast as possible. Zeke is a native, I think (I know people who went to high school with him in Durham), so he'll probably know best. I will note there are two very nice upscale bistros within a couple of blocks of the Carolina Theatre, Rue Cler and The Piedmont. Not sure what else there is in actual downtown Durham, but I'm pretty sure there's a bar there that some subsegment of the Duke IT community that does not include me frequents on Friday afternoons for what is known as "Geek Beer." Brightleaf Square is less than a mile from the Theatre and is a Hoppenin' Place nowadays, with several tavern/grills and a couple of nicer restaurants as well. There's another very highly-regarded restaurant next to Brightlleaf, Pop's. The Ninth Street district next to Duke's East Campus, also pretty close to downtown, has a good variety of eating and drinking establishments.

The traditional Durham answers to where to get barbecue would be Bullock's or Dillard's. I shamefully admit never having eaten at Dillard's, but it is (was?) truly old-school. I used to eat at Bullocks a lot when I lived in Durham, it is an old-style family-style restaurant - any number of menu combinations including lots of canned vegetables cooked in grease, very good fried chicken, or traditional barbecue. I just read a post that says they now get their barbecue from Smithfield Barbecue, a N.C. restaurant chain. It's not bad barbecue, but I wouldn't go there except as a lunch stop on the road back from Wilmington after a week at the beach. I'd verify this, and if it is wrong go to Bullock's. Google turns up a number of barbecue restaurants in Durham I've never heard of.

By the way, don't let anyone hear you say "North Carolina Barbecue" (let alone, Carolina Barbecue) around here, or you'll start a war. They's at least three different versions of what they call "q" (not to be confused with UNC point guard Quentin Thomas, also known as Q) cooked in N.C., and afficianados of each will fight you if you say there's ain't the best.

I hope to be on the golf course Saturday until it's time to go to dinner, preferably at Rue Cler. I'll see all of y'all at the Theatre - we're all sitting in about the same place, I think.

I love it!  North Carolinans are officially more bizarre and segmented in their fervor for BBQ than Texans.  Down here in Houston, we have a few joints that specialize in what they call "Carolina-style" barbeque.  I'm sure they are totally inauthentic by any local measure, but I actually prefer it to some Texas BBQ.  So I'll be a piss-poor representative for the Lone Star State.

In any case, I digress.  See all you freaks on Saturday!

How much are you payin' BobbyD? If the price is right, I might be convinced to run back and forth between you and P. Although I'm probably too old.

C and D Snow will be there. We will also be staying at the Marriott. (Not that any of you know us " 'cause I ain't got no time fo' you, honey" ...to quote arguably one of  my favorite worst Memphis City Public Schools teachers ever to grace a classroom.) But, we'll be there nonetheless.

BobbyD, you'd have to share me with Phillip. Sorry!

OK Teens, looks like it's time to try to herd cats. Can we have a vote on a dinner place from those folks who are planning to meet up before the show for a bite? And also, that will help us get a head count, and if you like, we can call ahead and make reservations.

Piedmont: http://www.piedmontrestaurant.com/

Rue-Cler (ooh, la-la!) http://www.ruecler-durham.com/

Pops http://www.pops-durham.com/

Look forward to seeing everyone Saturday! Andy is en route and we're picking him up at the Wilmington aerpuerto tonight!
