I was in Chicago this weekend to see Gary Louris and I had time in the day so I went over to check out Schuba's. Indeed a cool spot, its like an old German American meeting lodge with all this wood panelling and stained glass windows and even a wooden bench like a pew that runs along the wall in the music hall. I wish I were going to the show, it looks like a cool spot. I saw posters for Tift's show in the window and another one in the men's room, good job, Chicago Scream Team person! I took a photo, will try to post if I can figure it out.
Days Inn Lincoln Park was good, but don't stay close to the elevator, it squeeks badly and the rooms are not very sound proof, it woke me up in the morning. "Go away, Need sleepies!"
The guests were definitely NOT rock 'n' roll , though. More like retired Midwesterners from the country on vacation in the big city. There was a wedding party and a bunch of sports fans from Ohio, not sure why. They were all cracking cans of Bud light from the coolers they were dragging around the lobby, it was quite funny! I'd still recommend it as a good place to stay. I liked the neighborhood around there, too. Try some Goose Island beer if you are in town, good local stuff.
Oh and late night food can be had with accompanying abuse at no charge from the folks at the Wiener's Circle on Clark just south of the Days Inn. Kinda like the Soup Nazi, they yell at you when you don't order right. All in good fun, though. The Chicago dog I had hit the spot at 11:30 PM. Its the place to go after a night in the bar.
And I found out that Kathleen Edwards will be at the Metro the very next night from Tift, how cool is that! I could've seen Shelby Lynne the night after seeing Gary Louris, too, if I had known about it. Chicago is a good town for music. |
