While we never would be able to exhaust the supply of great Tift Merritt live performances and outtakes that have not been released officially, we've noticed at tm.net headquarters that week-to-week interest in the 96-proof bootlegs has diminished. (One download in the past five weeks is a pretty clear sign.)
For that reason, we are shutting down the weekly posting of bootleg recordings to this website's downloads section. It's been a good run, ever since Phillip Reid posted a live, Tambourine-band cover of Van Morrison's "Comfort You" in November 2007. That track alone has been downloaded 267 times. Several others have attracted similar interest.
If you think the end of weekly bootlegs means bad news, here is some additional information that might help you feel better about the decision:
- The existing bootlegs are going nowhere. You still can download them — for free — if you are registered at tiftmerritt.net.
- Those who have not visited the "downloads" page will find performances of roughly 125 different songs. With multiple performances featuring different bands, different arrangements, and occasional guest appearances, about 300 distinct tracks are available.
- While weekly postings are ending, that doesn't mean the end of bootlegs for this site. When we get access to a new song, a newly adopted cover version, or even a radical live reworking of a familiar tune, we will be sure to post the track at tm.net and draw your attention to it.
Plus there's no reason why bootlegs couldn't return to weekly status if the fans demand it. Boost the demand for downloads, and we'll crank out the supply.
In the meantime, please visit the downloads page and check out some of the great performances on tap from Tift, Jay, Zeke, Eric, Noah, Scott, Brad, Danny, Dave, Greg, and all the others who have rocked our world for so many years.
