I racked my brain to remember if I put this on here or not but don't think I did--if so, sorry.
At the UNCW show last fall she was talking about the first time she
played Merlefest. She had just finished Bramble Rose, if memory
serves me, and was celebrating. (She prefaced this story by
saying, "They're gonna think I'm such a drunk.") She was in her
motel room and as she put it "I celebrated the way mountain people
do--by drinking a lot." Eventually she passed out on her bed, but
she doesn't really remember that part. Then she explained that at
Merlefest, one of the stipulations in your contract is that you have to
play a community service gig in the local area in addition to your
festival appearance. You don't know in advance what that is going
to be, if memory serves me. Bright and early the next morning,
some older respectable representatives of Merlefest were knocking on
her motel room door and roused her from her sleep-off. She got
her guitar case and went with them, feeling of course absolutely
lovely. They took her to an elementary school. So here she
is, in the best of shape, with no idea what she's going to do, and as
she pointed out, she doesn't exactly write music for kids. She
said she just sat down on the floor with them, opened her guitar case,
let them ask her questions about what-all was in it, and she taught
them the one song of hers that she thought would work, which I've now
forgotten unfortunately, and they sang it several times. She said
it was the worst gig and the best gig she ever had.
