On September 17th Tift opened for Dwight Yoakam in Phoenix.  I had never heard of her before.  She was amazing.  My friends and I have now bought her cds and listen to her all day.

During the show, she sang a song and her only accompanyment was a tambourine.  I don't remember the words of the song exactly but it was something like "God help the working man" or something like that.  The song is not on any of her recordings.  I would really love to have the words to that song.  Do any of you know what song I'm talking about?

Thanks.

Hi lucyloo,

Did the song have a gospel feel to it? I went to see Tift in Birmingham, AL earlier this year and she did a song that knocked me out. It had a gospel feel to it, and the phrase 'God help the working man' is ringing a bell. Also, I thought I heard the word 'sleigh' in it, but I fear I am getting that wrong.

If that is the song you're talking about, I had never heard it before. I don't know if it will be on the new album, but I would love to hear it again.

Thanks so much for responding!  The song did have a gospel feel to it.  Since it was our first time ever hearing or seeing Tift, we got so lost in all of her music and now we are deperately searching for that song.  (My friends and I work for a legal aid program and the song really resonated with us.)

Anyway, I hope she puts it on the new album, too.  Any ideas when that might be out?

Thanks again!

That is "Lord, Help The Poor And Needy" by Jessie Mae Hemphill, an older blueswoman.  Don't know if she wrote it or just is well-known for singing it.  It might be an old blues tune, traditional.

Sorry, forgot to add this . . . . .  She did it pretty extensively during the 2005 tour, so there are at least 6 live recordings floating around that include it.
