Those of you who may have read the newspaper write-up of the Cambridge
Folk Festival may have gotten the distinct impression, as I did, that
things didn't go so well viz crowd reaction. According to an
e-mail I just got from her, though (as if I weren't high enough from
the 12 year old rum I've had tonight), it was all good, and they were
the number 3 record seller at the festival and she "had a ball."
She said that after she "needled the crowd" they got with the
program. So that's cool--we of the Tift Merritt Screaming Teen
Fan Club of course want her to be a big hit everywhere.

I was at the Cambridge Folk Festival and Tift was definitely a hit with the crowd! English crowds tend to be pretty quiet, but it doesn't mean they aren't enjoying the show. As Tift said, she was the 3rd best selling artist at the CD tent at the Festival - which is a great achievement! I heard lots of people saying how much they loved her sets, and there was a very long line of people when she did her signing session. I really hope it's a breakthrough for her!
What kind of crowd does Tift get in the USA? Because of the way she's been marketed in the UK she's been playing a lot small Americana clubs where the crowd tends to be older, and some of those shows have been soooooo quiet..!! I'm dying to come and see her in NC as I hear it's Loud!

Ive seen her twice in the Uk now, and as you say the way she is marketed here is the smaller venue. Thats ok, ive been able to get a pic, at the end etc, but the audiences are on the quiet side. In Newcastle in may she got this guy to buy her a beer, so that kinda broke the ice, but yep id love to see her witha full band - she did say she would bring a band somtime, so i hope so. my dream is to see her in NC.......

I've seen Tift 3 times now: twice in May of 2005 at small clubs (Chicago and Newport, KY), and once this past June in Birmingham, AL (review).
The crowd in Chicago was the most enthused. That was the first time I'd seen her, and they were definitely into it. The crowd in Newport took a while, but by the end of the show, they were standing all around the stage.

Vicky and Gary--you guessed it. When she and the band show up in
town, whether at The Soapbox, a club that holds maybe 250 people, or at
the UNCW Auditorium with 2,000, there's a lot of boisterous energy
going back and forth, and of course the more we give her, the more she
can give back. The most satisfying Tift shows are the ones where
she doesn't have to spend any energy trying to get the crowd to loosen
up. Of course it helps with the band there--it's a straight-up
rock band and they all really crank it out. I come to Tift, so to
speak, from the Rolling Stones rather than from, say, Emmylou Harris,
so that's what I fell in love with. It's not that I, or the more
revved-up crowds, don't appreciate the gorgeous ballads she does--the
mix is part of her appeal--but even those have so much soul and power
that they work for a high-energy show too. I wish someone would
front the cash to get the whole band "over there" for a tour, but
reality is that the whole Tift operation has to work on a fairly tight
budget--as she's said, it ain't glamorous. Maybe if the 3rd
record does well, it'll happen.

I can see exactly what you mean , Phillip. Unless someone is a major star, its gonna be fairly difficult to take a whole band all round the UK/europe. It all comes down to money unfortunately. And of course she cant be 'pigeon-holed' into country, rock, or whatever, and thats why we love her i suppose! I would come to her more from emmylou rather than the stones!!, so just to hear her is fine , but ideally i'd love to see a full line up.

Hi all,
Well i have seen Tift twice once in The Boarderline in London and once at the Glee Club in Birmingham, two different crowd reactions ,London was great as people wanted to sing a long and enjoy themselves a little, but my home town of Birmingham was very quiet and i was even told to stop singing along by some guy next to me . THAT GOT MY BACK UP A LITTLE...Well having seen young Tift i think she wants to Rock A Little LIVE so i hope i get the chance to see her with the full band and kick some you know what. |

Woah, sorry, my computer is posting before I've finished .... ! What I was trying to say was, it's amazing how Tift can stand up in front of a really quiet crowd and put on a blinding show every single time. Other bands I've followed round get moody and/or just go through the motions when they're faced with a quiet crowd. Power to the Tiftster! I only wish I was that motived in my job... !
Gary - you and I have got start saving for a trip to NC!

Gary,
Excellent, meet you at Heathrow! My other dream is to see Tift at the Royal Albert Hall - gigs there are always something special. I reckon that will happen too.

Gary and Jeff,
Is it possible to travel in style wearing nothing but a see-through plastic bag ... ?
I will make the trip to NC at some point but, in the meantime, I'll post again when new UK dates are announced. It would be fun to get a group of us together for some shows?

Vicky, A meet up at a Tift Show would be good, As a earily riser ( POSTMAN) its tuff to do shows too far from Birmingham but will keep a look out for new UK dates and hope she plays here. Jeff |
