Kudos to Matthew "Shug" Wester for taking the time to interview both Scott McCall and Danny Eisenberg out west on the recently-concluded first NA tour of AC; these interviews provided the basis for the informative bio sketches we just posted here at tm.net.  Please go to The Band page and check them out.

Good stuff!

Two quick reactions:

1. I hope Danny played "Pablo Picasso" when he worked with Jonathan Richman. It's not much of a keyboard tune, but it's hilarious.

2. It's always good to find another fan of Big Star.

Thanks, Phillip, it was a fun project, hopefully it gives folks a bit more of a full picture of who these guys are who back up Tift. They have quite the impressive musical backgrounds and I think they bring all of their listening and playing history to the music they play with Tift and its a huge part of what makes them so good. There wasn't much factual info leftover that didn't get into the bios and we didn't really get philosophical or into lots of detail about what its like to play with Tift. That'll be for another time.

I love Big Star, too, Mitch. I got to see them live twice in 2003 when I lived in Memphis and it was a musical epiphany, to say the least, to finally hear those songs lovingly played live by at least two of the musicians who created the music. If you ever get a chance to chat with Scott, you can go off on a zillion tangents about music and other stuff because he is so knowledgable.

That Pablo Picasso song is from the Modern Lovers, I believe, which would make it quite a few years earlier than when Danny played with Jonathan Richman.

Nice work Shug! Great to read these updated bios.
Glad to see Danny hasn't given up on those pancakes!

I enjoyed reading the profiles for Scott and Danny very much, great to see some love for Big Star, I knew I wasn't the only one still into them. I highly recommend the cd In Space released in 2005 with Alex Chilton, Jody Stephens and the Posies, lot of great songs on here that capture the spark that Big Star had on #1 Record and Radio City. Wouldn't it be cool to hear Tift do one of theirs, Kelly Willis did a great job with When My Baby's Beside Me for a Big Star tribute, I could see Tift singing My Life Is Right or Watch The Sunrise, guitar or piano driven. LOL about Pabloc Picasso, I remember that one on the radio when I was in high school but never knew who the band was, speaking of covers Tift could take Roadrunner back from Joan Jett, although I love her rawking version!

Rawk On,

Tom

Great to know that Danny played with one of my favorite bands - the Mother Hips.

That's awesome, vinylfan!  I've seen the Mother Hips almost 100 times, I lived in Sonoma County and got to see them all over the Bay Area, mostly Inn of the Beginning in Cotati, The Last Day Saloon, Slim's, Fillmore, and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, but we also went all over the state of California to see them from about 1994 to 2001 and I still like to see them when I get back to California.  The Mother Hips are one of the greatest under-appreciated rock bands of all time, in my mind.  I was way bummed out when Danny stopped playing with them, and I was thrilled when I found out he was playing with Tift.

For people who haven't heard them, I'd describe them as a classic four piece rock combo (two guitars, bass and drums, occasionally augmented by a keyboardist) who play original songs with their primary influences being Neil Young, The Beach Boys, Merle Haggard, The Everly Brothers and The Kinks.  They have six albums of original songs and they like to throw in a cover song or two from some of their influences when they play live.  Guitars are clean and classic, harmonies are spine-tinglingly good, and songs can range from 3 minute hook-laden classic pop to rhythm-heavy thunderous riff-jamming.  Truly a gem of a rock band who must been seen live to be fully appreciated but who have also made some damn fine studio recordings.

Danny only played on one of their records, Shootout.  Here's a link to a review I wrote at a time when the Hips were on indefinite hiatus, thus the past tense used to describe their existence.

Shug, do you have the hips latest? Kiss the Crystal Flake. If not, highly recommended. A sonic headphone journey indeed! I've only seen the hips a couple of times - they didn't play Minneapolis very much and it seems when they did I was unable to go. Back to the Grotto was my first experience with them many years ago. I still love that album. Kiss the Crystal Flake is also available on vinyl and if you've got a table, crank it up.

For those that are interested, archive.org has numerous Mother Hips live shows for download.

I received an email from Zeke saying they are looking to release Another Country on vinyl this summer.

Yeah, Kyle, I'm all over Crystal Flake, too. They definitely know their way around a recording studio. I haven't kept up with all of Tim and Greg's side projects, they are quite prolific!
