For those who scan the forum more often than the calendar, it appears TM will make a couple of appearances on the Letterman show during the next few weeks.

  • Thursday night (backing Emmylou Harris)
  • June 25

But Phillip, Chris, or one of our other in-house experts might want to confirm that she'll be appearing June 25. Her MySpace page indicates a concert in Portland, Maine, that night.

I know Letterman pre-records his show, but does that leave TM (and band, if it's a band show) enough time to reach Maine from NYC?

You know I'll be watching and recording. Don't know about the Letterman and Maine show but if anyone could do it I'll bet Tift could.

Congratulations to you, Tift, on getting to perform with Emmylou - so glad you're a member of her musical family tree, and vice versa!

I think the June 25 show in Portland was a typo. It now reads July 25th, and it looks like Tift will be on Letterman on June 25th.

Chris, you are confusing me.  I have already set my DVR for June 12.  I can't set it that far ahead.  What if I forget?

Sorry about the confusion, but Phillip is right in his post above. She'll be backing Emmylou Harris this Thursday evening, then she'll be on again on June 25th. This is a good chance for me to plug one of the Calendar features. If you click on any of the events in the Calendar, you should see a link labeled Export Event to Desktop Event. You can use that to update your personal calendar. I use Outlook, but I think it also works with Google Calendar.

I was pleasantly surprised that TM got some good face time during last night's performance.

Plus she wore Jana's favorite dress!

I thought somebody would've posted it to YouTube by now. Maybe they'll put the performance on Letterman's web site soon. Did they mention Tift's Americana nomination?

My face time comment should have been clearer. I meant that viewers actually saw several shots in which Tift was featured prominently. That was a pleasant surprise to me; I feared she might be one of those background singers who are often heard and not seen.

She also was the only background singer. There was no sign of Phoebe Snow.

Neither Letterman nor Emmylou mentioned Tift (Emmylou said nothing other than thanking Dave when he praised her performance as the show concluded), so there was no discussion of the Americana nomination. Let's hope Letterman will mention that great news when Tift is back in two weeks.

(If anyone out there has a Red Lasso account, perhaps you can send a link to a clip of the performance.)

David Menconi talked to Tift about what she thought about getting to backup Emmylou:

Hey Chris,

Thanks for posting the story and photo of Tift and EmmyLou together.   I know Tift was elated to have been singing with her on Letterman and we are happy for her.   I caught the show by complete accident, my girlfriend's computer ironically refused to eject Another Country from her computer, so after an hour she finally admitted to me she had a big problem and that my CD might be toast !  I was like what ?  Needless to say, she got my attention and I was able to rescue my CD which reminded me to check the websight to find out when she was playing on Letterman.  The schedule said the 12th which did not seem right, but things change so I turned on the tv and there was Tift and EmmyLou.   Can't wait for the 25th.  Do you know if the full band is playing or just Tift ?   Hotter than sin in Texas now, I hope things are a bit cooler in Alabama.  BTW, the Fan website seems to be running well, so kudos to you and all who are responsible.  Take care.  Peter

I thought Tift really looked good! But I found EmmyLou's sang kind of strange. Maybe I'd have to hear it a few more times.

Youtube video of the song from the show has turned up!  Get onto it quick... these things have a habit of disappearing without warning...

I like the song, and you can hear Tift's vocals come through strongly.

Thanks for posting the link; already downloaded :}.. there are a couple of nice remarks on Tift's harmony noted on the emmylou.net discussion forum.... and um, Dave.. could you be any MORE perfunctory on reading from your notes while introducing an artist?

I have to agree with (new)Robert.  I have been a fan of Emmylou ever since I saw her at North Dakota State University in 1978,  back when she still had dark hair and Ricky Scaggs was playing mandolin for her (about the time of "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town"), but I thought her song on Letterman sounded a little wierd.  I was happy, however, that she switched from Gibson to Martin.

I also agree with (original) Robert.  Letterman intoduces his musical acts like he is ordering a Happy Meal.  Let's see a little excitement Dave!

Finally, this is why I have a love/hate relationship with my DVR.  DVR's stop recording when they think the show is over, even if it isn't.  Mine stopped recording Letterman before Emmylou's song was over .

I see from .com that TM and band will perform "Morning Is My Destination" when they appear on Dave's show Wednesday night.

TEAMer Sandra B. wrote The Late Show asking about the Emmylou/Tift clip, and here's what she got:

Hi Sandra

Emmylou Harris' performance is up on our website. You can view it on Dave TV under the Live on Letterman category. Thanks for your support and interest in our show.
