She's been in another country, in the recording studio, on the road, launching her own interview show on public radio in Texas. But Tift Merritt's finally giving Charleston a date: Fri. Aug. 22 at the Windjammer. Merritt's garnering lots of press for her latest album, Another Country, in reference to the career-reappraising hiatus she took on Paris' Left Bank. Intended to be a two-week break from the grind of touring, her Paris stay extended itself into a few productive months and gave birth to most of the new songs on Another Country. Earlier this year, Esquire awarded her an "Esky" for Best Female Voice. Esquire's take on Merritt's talent manages to sum up how we feel about her, too: "We hear a voice singularly suited for both sunny spring afternoons and dark cold nights. Whether she's whispering in our ears her love or disappointment, you can't help but want to try a little harder." Yeah, that's about right.
