The Raleigh crowd turned out in full, loud force for Tift Merritt. I was a little too busy (which is a good thing) to pay attention to everything going on during the show, but I can tell you that MD No. 0 officially sealed the Maker's Mark deal during soundcheck and MD No. 9 was styling in his specially designed Maker's Mark T.

Opener Teddy Thompson was good (even if he did swipe my Sharpie).

Tift's set list:

Morning Is My Destination

Hopes Too High

Stray Paper

I Know What I'm Looking For Now

Another Country

Tell Me Something True

Supposed To Make You Happy

Keep You Happy

My Heart Is Free

Ain't Looking Closely

Broken

Late Night Pilgrim

Something To Me

When I Cross Over

(Encore)

Good Hearted Man

Neighborhood

Shadow In The Way

Mitch and Jana definitely had their hands full pushing music and merchandise all evening. Tift and the band had the hometown crowd up and dancing in front of the stage by the end, and from all the familiar faces with cameras, there should be plenty of photographs.

I got there on the later side, so I had to park about halfway to Cary, and missed the Maker's Mark soundcheck presentation entirely. And in the end, I still didn't get Scott McCall to sign my album, so he's still the only autograph I'm lacking. But in between those two events was a great show by opener Teddy Thompson, and by Danny E, Scott McCall, Jay Brown from Buies Creek, Zeke Hutchins, and... who am I leaving out?

Great to see Tift Merritt performing in her hometown again. Hope those of you who'll be in Wilmington tomorrow--or today--will have a great time.

Indeed, this show totally rocked.

It rocked so good, in fact, as noted a large crowd had gathered at the foot of the stage and were dancing the night away. In the encore, Tift announced she was going to play a slow dance. I think she was taken aback when the crowd insisted she reconsider. So she went straight into "Shadow in the Way" and left out what I suspect was going to be "Still Pretending."

Ordinarly, I'd've been most disappointed not to hear one of Tift's mesmerizing ballads. But having earlier in the day been able to give a standing O (interpret that as a capital letter or a digit, and you'll be right either way) to my very own serenade of "Still Pretending," I was already floating all night and still haven't quite come down.

I'll elaborate on the day when I get my photos figured out (this could take awhile).

I hope she's got something left for you guys in Wilmington. Wish her a Happy Tambourine Day for me.

Great posts guys, sounds like a show to die for. How big of a crowd was it? Forrest, can we expect to see a photo or two of you and T with the MM??? Did anyone get a picture of Scott and his MM shirt?? Thanks for helping at the merch. table Mitch and Jana, I'm sure that meant the world to them, did ya run out of anything? That was a rowdy crowd, kept her from playing a slow song you say, WOW!!! That is one show I feel really bad about not being able to see. Dang!! just to far away!!

I've got more photographs to process than I can count. So, last week I lent my USB connector to somebody, and today it doesn't work, so I can't get the images off the cards. Grrrrrr.

So, I received permission from Tift to photograph the sound check, which I'd done at the Home Is Loud show at the Art Museum.  It was peachy keen neato.  Tift wasn't on stage yet when I got to the amphitheatre, but her dad was standing in for her, rocking out with the band.

Tift finally made her appearance, and went through a few numbers as they got the different mikes and speakers and monitors all working to her satisfaction.

I wandered around taking pictures, much like I was part of the crew or something.

Finally, she said she would do one more number and then clear the stage.  She looked around at her bandmates, and then she said, 'I know, let's do 'Still Pretending'."  Well, that just sent my heart a-pounding.

You should understand that, aside from the sound crew, the band, a friend of mine who was hanging out by the sound board, and Mitch over to the side setting up the merchandise table (that would be Mitch the Merch), I was the only person in the audience.  This was like my own private performance.  I was spellbound.

Not to say my camera wasn't clicking, and when I was looking back at the pictures (which I'll get processed one of these days) I could hear the song in my head.

So Tift finishes, and I rise to give her a one-person standing ovation.  Then I walk right up onto the stage.  I believe she was a little surprised by this, she tried to tell me I was in the way of the sound man.  But I had two Makers Mark Minis I'd smuggled in, and I was able to hand them to her.

That's a fantastic story Forrest. So pleased you were able to finally hand-over the Maker's too - you should get another zero on your M-D number for that! A Double-O Mack-Daddy if you like! Can't wait for all the pics too.

As we await more photos from Forrest (and from Phil, I hope), you might apprecate David Menconi's rave review of the show. During all of last weekend's excitement, I had forgotten to check his blog.

I'm glad I looked at it this morning. Here's my favorite part:

Five months of touring has tightened the ensemble immeasurably, and they hit every little nuance and change just right. Bassist Jay Brown, especially, has emerged as the James Jamerson of the alternative-country set, with prominently melodic basslines (plus great harmony vocals) that put more rhythmic punch into every song.

As an aside, you might enjoy the fact that today's News & Observer invoked Tift's name in a spoof about Raleigh politics. She's mentioned along with the Connells to represent top-notch Raleigh musical artists.
