A friend and I will be traveling to Raleigh in October to see Tift and (fingers crossed) Earl Scruggs at the North Carolina State Fair -- does any one have any nuggets of wisdom to share on this?  Thoughts on the venue?  Know anything about ticket sales?  NC weather in October?  Advice on other attactions in the area?  Areas of town to avoid?  Anything at all?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer...

They just started charging for admission to the Dorton Arena shows at the N.C. State Fair a couple of years ago, and I haven't been to one since.  I think they sell tickets to the shows at the fair; not sure if they sell them in advance.  The venue is general admission, with temporary seats on the floor and the permanent seats on the side.  The arena was built for basketball, in all likelihood.  It is  noted for its unusual architecture.  It has truly horrible acoustics.  Start watching the for the line to form to get in and get in early so you can sit up front for the visual part of the show.

October is usually wonderful everywhere in North Carolina.  The leaves will not start changing colors in Raleigh that early, but you should be able to see some good colors around Grandfather Mountain if you can travel in that direction after you go to the fair.  Of course, with the melting of the Greenland Ice Cap you never know what kind of weather to expect anymore.

I am trying to keep the Calendar updated with information about the North Carolina State Fair show. I've added some links, and will try to check weekly to see if there is any more information posted.

If you hear of anything, post it here and I'll try to add it to the Calendar.

There is updated information on the NC State Fair website today -- I don't exactly know how to post a link, but I'm going to shut my eyes and hope this works:

So far it looks like it worked!    That was way too simple tho'...!
