Was in Manchester last night to see Kathleen Edwards (who was awesome btw) and took some Tift posters and postcards with me.

It was cool to see so many Tift posters ALREADY up and advertising the 5th July show at the Academy -  I left Tift postcards all over the place too, so I think they're going to get the message!

Pics of posters at or near the venue...

I like that they have noted that its a full band show for Tift, that's a good sized poster, seems like the promoter and/or venue are doing a pretty good job.

Also cool that Yngwie Malmsteen is playing that same month, I'd be seeing both of those shows if I lived near Manchester!

I disagree.  I think that kind of picture will put a lot of people off, especially women.  The Another Country marketing is sooo much better!

Personally, I would like to see some posters with her playing the guitar, and a video of her rocking out with the band, to give people who haven't heard her before a really clear idea what she does.

But as P says, good that the promoter is promoting!  Will be interesting to see if the show sells out (and how many women are in the audience ... !)  I'm probably going, so I will let you know.

You have a valid point there Vicky but all the promo pictures I've seen of Tift only show her more feminine side. Lots of fan pictures of her rockin out but none used for promo purposes but I must confess I havn't seen everything out there. When you see her in a few days bring up the subject and see what she has to say, I think she'll agree with you. I know I'd like to see a few like that. I've been to a few shows here in MPLS where people have been standing outside the venue handing out hundreds of cd's to people entering and leaving a show, they were of different groups, not the ones that were performing. To do that on a dvd level the price per dvd would be exorbitant. I'm in video production and have been asked by a few bands to do the very thing you suggested, when I came back with a quote for a couple thousand copies they just rolled their eyes and said "forget it". When I suggested they could sell the videos for what they cost, about $3.50, they didn't even want to try that. On a cd a bands sound can change because of new material but on dvd a band can change it's look, ie new band members, from time to time so to keep current a new video would have to be produced also. When that happens all the unsold dvd's would have to go in the trash can because they don't represent the band in it's current form. Video is all about the here and now except when your doing a documentary, then anything goes. If you want to see a "FANTASTIC" band doc check out "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream", it's great.  Sorry for being so long winded

I'd love a live DVD! ... but in my previous post I just meant a promo video for one of the 'singles'.  I think a full band performance video would be good ... though 'Virginia' was close I suppose.

The good thing with Street Teaming is that we can customize promo materials to target different market segments.  So I've made up some flyers that I hope will appeal to women my age (30-something) and younger ... have been handing them out at Sheryl Crow gigs this week.

Hoping Tift might get on TV at Glastonbury today .... the BBC is giving it massive coverage here in the UK, don't know if you get to see it in the US?  I love Amy Winehouse but, wow, she gave a bad performance yesterday ....  they should definitely have had Tom Petty on instead!!

Yeah Vicky, I knew where you were coming from but the only rockin video they could take it from is the Austin City Limits video which is over 3 years old and I think ASL owns the right to that, don't quote me on that though. So now your back to the "we don't have any rockin video promo" and to do it Tift has to shell out big bucks to have one done. Sorry to say but Tift is just not a big enough draw at this stage to warrent that kind of capital out-lay. Just to do a top notch one song multi camera shoot would cost in the tens of thousands of dollars and that's just for the shoot not to mention the dvd authoring, packaging, duplicating etc. Even a one camera "music video style" video, like one for Sheryl Crow, would be in the tens of thousands of dollars. The whole thing has to be a professionally done package because Tift is a national and international artist and as we all know, Tift is worth it.

Well, someone must have paid for the 'Broken' video, so I don't see why the band couldn't have been playing in that!

But the original point I was trying to make was that Tift seems to have very few female fans - which is obviously bad for her commercially - and the way she is marketed can make a big difference to that.  Just simple things like the choice of photo on a poster or a flyer.

Amen.

Your right Vicky, more should be done to attract female fans. Maybe when the marketing people read our posts here they will do something. Amen
