If you've started visiting tm.net only in the past few months, you might not know about one of our favorite features: the 96-proof bootleg.

Each week, we highlight a recording of a Tift performance from the road or the radio (or, on a rare occasion, from the studio itself) that hasn't been released officially. We post those tunes each Tuesday morning (actually Monday night, if I remember to do it) in this website's "downloads" section. Phillip Reid creates some attractive cover art for each selection. Tm.net members can download the tracks for free.

As with past Tift Merritt album releases, we shut down the bootlegs ths fall in honor of Traveling Alone. Now they're back. The first selection of 2013 highlights Tift's performance with John Howie Jr. of "Suppose Tonight Would Be Our Last," recorded Oct. 13 at the Yep Roc Records' 15th anniversary celebration in Carrboro, N.C.

Please head to this website's downloads section to find this track and other 96-proof favorites. Enjoy!

This week's selection returns to last fall's Yep Roc 15th anniversary celebration. Tift adds her vocals to John Doe & The Sadies' take on Waylon Jennings' "Stop The World And Let Me Off."

This week's selection pairs Tift with Chatham County Line, the band featuring former Carbines bandmates Dave Wilson and Greg Readling. They tackled "Feeling Of Beauty," one of the standout tracks from Traveling Alone, during the last night of CCL's holiday tour in Saxapahaw, N.C.

This week's selection takes us to one of Tift's favorite venues — City Winery — in her adopted hometown of New York City for a September 2012 performance of "In The Way," one of the fine tracks from Traveling Alone.

Thanks to MK for continuing to roll these out for the actually pretty substantial number of people who apparently enjoy them.

Thanks for the props, Phillip.

This week's selection focuses on a Knoxville, Tenn., radio appearance last summer, not too long before the release of Traveling Alone. Tift shared with a WDVX audience a fine solo version of "To Myself."

If you enjoy Eric Heywood's contributions to Tift's live performances, you're likely to enjoy this week's selection: last week's performance of "Marks" in Portland, Maine.

I second that thank you to Mitch and all who make these possible, especially TM for sharing.  Peter

Thanks, Peter.

In honor of the recent release of the Two-Dollar Pistols with Tift Merritt EP on vinyl, this week's 96-proof selection highlights one of the standout tracks from that collection: the Porter Wagoner-Dolly Parton hit "Just Someone I Used To Know."

Tift and her old duet partner John Howie Jr. tackled the tune last fall during the Yep Roc Records' 15th anniversary celebration in Carrboro, N.C.

This week's selection highlights Tift's surprise appearance supporting Andrew Bird last fall on "The Late Show With David Letterman." Tift, Bird, and standup bassist Alan Hampton performed Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" before a nearly empty Ed Sullivan Theatre during the turmoil of Hurricane Sandy.

If you haven't heard it, you'll enjoy Letterman's effusive praise of Tift's work. Head to this website's downloads section to find this track and other 96-proof favorites.

Tift and Eric Heywood have added an acoustic cover of Tom Waits' "Train Song" during recent shows. This week's 96-proof bootleg highlights their performance of that track during last week's tour stop in Asheville.

This week's selection highlights a recent radio appearance in Milwaukee. Tift and Eric Heywood offer a stripped-down performance of one of Traveling Alone's best rockers, "Still Not Home."

Tift has restored the Tambourine classic "Your Love Made A U-Turn" to some recent set lists. This week's 96-proof bootleg features a full-band take on that tune during a February performance in St. Louis.

The new Night album pairing Tift with classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein includes a cover version of "Wayfaring Stranger."

Tift performed that song solo during an afternoon show earlier this month at the Ringwood, N.J., library. We feature that track as this week's 96-proof bootleg.

Thanks again to Jonathan Lee, who pointed us toward Jeff Keith's 2002 recording of Tift's performance during the final show at Pine Hill Farm. From Keith's video, this week's 96-proof selection features a solo Tift take on the rare track "Broad Daylight."

This week's selection highlights one of Tift's hardest-rocking tracks, "Nineteen," which documents some memories of "the summer that Kurt Cobain died." This performance is from Tift's 2010 summer tour stop in Buffalo.

Head to tm.net's "downloads" page to find "Nineteen" and other great 96-proof bootlegs.

This week we highlight one of the newest additions to Night, Tift's genre-busting collaboration with Simone Dinnerstein. The duo combined the old tune "I Will Give My Love An Apple" with the new Tift song "Colors" for both the Night album and the recent run of concert performances.

Head to this website's downloads page to find the recent performance from New York City's Merkin Concert Hall.
